Where to Roam in Caucasus Mountains

The Caucasus is a mountain range between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea It is considered a part of the natural boundary between Europe and Asia. In warm and vivid Tbilisi you will find everything you wanted to see while in Georgia: the tower blocks, the Ladas, fruit stalls laden with watermelons, apricots, and fat plums, smooth crumbling mansions with beautiful wooden balconies, old castles on hills, some medieval churches of pink-gold stone, some mosques, baroque theatres, a few stalls selling icons, a few drinking horns, and silver daggers. Tbilisi is one of the most attractive cities in the Caucasus, and one should take some time to explore the Old Town and the incredible collection of gold artifacts from pre-Christian Georgia in the Janashia Museum. Georgia is also famous for its beautiful churches: there are fine examples at Mtskheta and Ananauri which can both be visited in a day trip from Tbilisi.

Walkers will want to explore the mountains and traditional villages in the north of the country. To the east of Tbilisi there is the wine-growing region of Kakheti with its many historical monuments.

For hiking, late spring and summer are the best times to visit. In early spring, traveling through the mountains can be risky because of landslides caused by melting snow. The cities can get uncomfortably hot in July and August.
Winters are best avoided unless you want to ski.
