Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, also known as Big Mountain, lies just north of Whitefish in Northwest Montana. The second major ski region in the state, Whitefish Mountain has skiing option for everybody, from transitional skiing to powder skiing.
While the peak of Big Mountain is 6817 feet, it comes out nearly 4,000 feet above the valley below. The ski region itself has a lift-served upright of 2080 feet on the southern part, and 1200 feet on the northern part.
When looking at the track map, new guests may overwhelmed. And indeed, for a mountain of its extent, Whitefish Mountain has a restricted chosen "trail network". Don't let the map give the wrong impression: the entire mountain is easy to get to, providing for excellent skiing for anybody who take pleasure in tree skiing, powder skiing, or bump skiing. Owing the utter acreage, it is very easy to find powder stashes many days after a snowfall.
Speaking of snowfall, Whitefish Mountain gets ample of it. During a usual winter, the resort receives about 360 inches, leading to a packed base of more than 120 inches on the higher elevations of the hill.
Lift lines are a varied bag at Whitefish Mountain. Amid Monday and Thursday, during non-holiday periods, there are a small number of lines anywhere on the hill, though, for instance, a very small line might build up on the main lift, - the Big Mountain Express.
However, during festival periods or on the weekends, look forward to some potentially long lift lines on the Big Mountain Express lift, since it is the only lift that shows the way from the Village to the peak. On the weekends, to keep away from the lift lines think of using either the express lift on the northern part of the mountain, or the Swift Creek Express.
Not like most ski area in Montana, guests of the ski area have no lack of slope-side lodging or dining choices to choose from. Several hotels and many condo developments are accessible for overnight settlement. A lot of restaurants, ranging from usual ski region fare to delicate dining, are all situated in the Village part.
Those with their own cars will also find their way to Whitefish Mountain. Up until 2009, the street to the ski region wasn't the most enjoyable of mountain trips due to many sharp switchbacks and sheer grades. Fortunately, development and re-routing on parts of the road have made the drive to the ski region safe, fast, and easy.
